A spotlight on Luno

Luno is a global cryptocurrency investment company making investing easy for 11 million customers in 43 countries.

To run their business globally, Luno relies on a distributed team spread across several continents. They run 9 offices in UK, South Africa, Nigeria, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and USA. A time before TravelPerk

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Luno’s team had a credit card for all travel expenses. The company was small at the time, with only 4 people working on the finance team when Byron rejoined in 2018.

Soon, the plague struck and made any and all travel disappear.

According to Byron, this was actually a big relief for the finance team because of how problematic travel expense management was at the time. “We had to monitor the balance of the card used for travel booking and top it up. The problem was that many people booked on the same day, and it took quite some time for the deposit to be reflected on the card. Ultimately, it could be in three or four days when people simply cannot book travel.

And then in 2021, travel starts to come back and things get even more complicated: “Suddenly, after the pandemic lost the appetite for travel, people needed to see each other.”

Combined with this the headcount at Luno had increased significantly, meaning that managing travel was becoming a nightmare. In just a few years, Luno’s finance team alone grew from 4 to 40 people. These 40 people had a lot to do – and dealing with hotel and flight reimbursements was not on their agenda.

That’s when Luno found Travelpark.

To date, Luno employees have booked 228 trips through TravelPerk, valued at nearly one million dollars.

“It’s been quite a game changer for us because as soon as we set up the TravelPark platform and all the approvals, we could just add a Pleo credit card, and that was it. We brought back travel for the company in about 2 weeks.”
